Product Guide: Choosing the Right Vibe

Choosing the best sex toy can be intimidating, especially if you’re buying your ideal first vibrator. There are so many different kinds of vibrator out there: rabbits, bullets, dual vibes, silicone vibes. So, we’ve compiled this how-to guide for what to look for to choose the best vibrator for you. From beginners to experienced toy users, what kind of sensations you want to feel, and size, we’ve included some advice and recommendations to help you.

The main factors when choosing a vibrator are:

  • Experience Level
  • Internal or External Sensations
  • Size
  • Material
  • Waterproof
  • If All Else Fails

Experience Level

Firstly, your experience level with toys is a huge factor to consider when purchasing a vibrator. If you’re trying to find your first vibrator, we recommend a smaller bullet that isn’t intimidating and we would suggest avoiding larger dual vibes. Bigger toys are normally more geared towards more experienced pleasure-seekers. We wouldn’t suggest for a beginner to use a dual vibe or any toy that’s quite thick. But, for those who are more used to using sex toys, those vibes are on the (bedside) table.

Our recommendations for newbies to the self-pleasure scene include the Nobü Nöla Set. This 3-piece set includes a super-powerful little bullet along with 2 silicone sleeves, meaning you can dip your toe into all kinds of pleasure at your own leisure.

Internal or External Sensations

An important aspect to consider when buying a vibrator: what are you hoping to get out of using it? While this sounds like an easy question, you’d be surprised as to how many kinds of pleasure there are.

For example, if you want to focus on pleasuring mainly the clitoris or the labia, any external areas, you can use a smaller bullet or even a finger vibe that loops around your finger with a vibrator at the end. You have more control over pin-point sensations with these toys; an example of this is the BSwish BDesired Bullet or the Nobü Capi Finger Vibe.

If you’re going all-in on clitoral stimulation, you can always try a suction, pulse, or tapping vibes. These toys fit around the clitoris and provide an intense sensation that feels like receiving oral sex. We recommend that you try toys like the We-Vibe Melt.

Another form of external toy is the massage wand. While they can be used as a wellness product to massage other body parts, these toys are secretly a pleasurable toy that delivers vibrations externally. These sex toys deliver more intense vibrations as they have larger and more powerful motors. Our team recommends the Bodispa Wonderwand 2.0. While being less discrete, these toys really pack a punch where you’re wanting it most.

However, if you’re looking to stimulate your G-Spot, then you should be looking at internal toys that are long enough to hit that special spot. These toys come in many shapes and sizes, and this is really where personal preference comes into play: want something more slender or a bit thicker? In order to hit that G-Spot, these vibes are often more flexible and focus most of the vibrations on the slightly more bulbous head. A fan favourite is the Nobü Gwën. Vibrators with suction cups are also fun if you want to have a mounted vibe.
Be sure to check out our whole selection of G-Spot vibes to find just the thing to tickle your fancy (and more).

Dual vibrators are for those who want it all: internal and external sensations. Dual vibes – or rabbits – come in all shapes and sizes, each doing their own thing to get you all the way. These toys come with a larger internal stimulator to hit that sweet G-Spot and a shorter branch that aims to pleasure your clit. Check out all our dual vibes to see what works for you! Do you want thrusting? Warming? Rumbling? Waving? We have it! Want a clitoral stimulator in the shape of a rabbit? Clit suction? We’ve got you covered!
Some team favourites for dual vibes include the Satisfyer Magic Bunny and the Brazzers Thumper Vibe Rabbit.

Size

The size of your toy is probably the easiest thing to consider when buying a new toy. Do you live with roommates or parents? Need something quiet and discrete? Then a smaller bullet is probably your best friend – thanks to their smaller size, they use a smaller motor which means they’re generally quieter and are easier to hide in your bedside drawer. Despite their size, most bullets still deliver intense vibrations.

If you’re looking for an internal vibe that hits the g-spot, a slightly longer toy might be better – more reach and flexibility is what you’re looking for. Once again, we recommend that newcomers to the fabulous world of self-pleasure try smaller toys before gradually working their way up to larger toys.

Larger toy = larger motor = more noise. It’s that simple at the end of the day. Of course there are exceptions: some bigger toys market themselves as being whisper-quiet. Be sure to check the product description and packaging to make the most informed decision.

Material

Each material has its own benefits and uses, and it’s important to know what would work best for you and your sex life.

Medical grade silicone is the standard among toy brands – it’s super silky and hypoallergenic, making it a favourite for most. Silicone also tends to be more flexible, allowing for a more luxurious feel. Not only that but silicone is also a non-porous material, making it easier to clean and it doesn’t attract dirt. Something to note though: only use water-based lubricants, since silicone-based lubes cause the silicone of the toy to wear away. Overall, we often recommend silicone toys over other materials.

ABS plastic is a stiffer, firmer material. Benefits of using ABS is that the vibrations tend to be stronger as there isn’t a thicker material barrier between you and the motor. There are also no limitations with what lubes you use, whether it be silicone or water-based. Plastic toys also have dials to change speed as opposed to buttons, giving you a more customizable experience. However, this material is more likely to be louder than silicone, so if you’re looking for a quiet vibe, this might not be right for you. These toys are also mostly battery-operated, as opposed to charged via USB.

Jelly used to be a very common material for vibrators but have been phased out over time, with brands choosing to make their toys out of silicone instead. But there are still some jelly toys out there. Like ABS plastic toys, they tend to be cheaper than silicone toys and are battery operated. While the low price point is an attractive feature, these toys are also porous, meaning they easily attract dirt, and some jelly toys also contain latex.

Waterproof

If you’re wanting to take a dip with your toy, be on the look-out for waterproof toys! IPX7 waterproof toys are fully submergible and you can use them in the bath, hot tub, shower, wherever you want! These toys are often USB rechargeable as opposed to being battery-operated.

IPX6 toys, however, are splash-proof, as opposed to waterproof. You cannot submerge these toys in water, but you can splash them with liquid and it will still function. If you’d rather use the toy in the bedroom instead of the bathtub, then IPX6 toys will suit you.

If All Else Fails

In the event that you’ve read all of this information and you still can’t quite decide on the right toy for you, there is one more piece of advice we can give you: choose your favourite colour. Seriously. Subconsciously you’re more likely to be more attracted to a toy that you’re visually attracted to. Say you don’t like pink, don’t choose a pink toy, even if it’s the best thing since sliced bread. If you don’t like how it looks, you’re not going to pick it up as often.
